Kind Healthy Life

kindness first

Or rather less suffering. Life is difficult enough without the added man-made suffering that comes in oh so many flavors. Let’s do less harm. Leave things better than we found them. Only use what we need. Cultivate kindness.

Although my “no-meat for me” journey started more than 30 years ago, more recently I was moved by health reasons to find solutions to feel better in my body. I also wanted to feel better about the many modern-day choices I make surrounding food, water, and the environment that I enjoy every day.

Here are a few organic products and brands ( affiliate links) I love and use all the time:

Beyond Burgers
Impossible Meatballs
Miyoko’s Creamery Vegan Butter
Anthony’s Nutritional Yeast

Around 2017 my daughter was studying to become a functional nutritionist and she commented to me about how all the other nutritionists in class were plant-based eaters (my daughter was a heavy meat eater at the time) and thought perhaps they were onto something. She started reading studies about plant-based diets and their positive effects in reversing and controlling the majority of the chronic diseases affecting humans. Then her classmates shared with her the films that launched a million vegans. Game Changers, What the Health, Fed Up, Cowspiricy, My Octopus Teacher, Forks Over Knives, Blackfish, and more. We watched them all. It was painful. Not pleasant. Heart-breaking. Yet still, I felt I could not change a damn thing. Animals were going to suffer and die. The animal processing workers would live and work in terrible conditions. The environment would suffer. I knew I wouldn’t be able to make a huge impact on climate and environmental concerns by myself. But I knew I could control what I spent my money on. So I started there. Small steps in one direction are still steps to progress.

I started choosing products at the market that are made with an eye toward less animal suffering and ingredients that I can understand (like peas, mung beans, olive oil, spinach, apples, salt, etc). I subscribed to buy local veggies via Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). I looked for products that have less packaging and plastic. Plus, I installed a reverse osmosis water filtration system at my kitchen sink (the toxins in the water were building up in my blood), bought an organic latex bed (the Polyurethane foam off-gases were building up in my blood too), and started to choose mainly organic foods. “Yeah, it’s more expensive,” I would say to my husband when he saw the receipt, and then I’d remind him “You either pay now for organic foods or you pay later for medical bills.”

Meanwhile, my sister has been a passionate vegetarian for many years and had recently been on her own new journey to be 100% plant-based. We talked often about the choices we make each day at the market, what new products were launched, what recipes we liked, and how our husbands were handling the no-meat and cheese business.

Together we thought we could do a bit more, so in 2020 she and I launched a plant-based campaign and website to promote a kind, healthy lifestyle. When you know better, you do better.

About Kind Healthy Life

We are a family who are deeply concerned about the health of our family, humanity, and our planet. Our mission is to inspire and support those on a journey toward a kinder, healthier, mainly plant-powered lifestyle.

We know everyone is on their own journey to be the best version of themselves. Sometimes you just need a little inspo to get you into the mindset you’ll need to make a difference in your life and the lives of the people and animals around you. Many times it is a health crisis that gets you motivated for change. It doesn’t have to be that way though.

Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead is an easy read and is an affiliate link.

You can decide to make a change for a variety of reasons.

  • Maybe you watched a movie or read a book about factory farming.

  • Maybe you live or know someone who works in the food industry.

  • Maybe you are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired and read a book about how you could feel better.

  • Maybe you watched an interesting TED talk about climate change.

Whatever your reason, there is so much information out there. Do the work of being curious and open to new ideas. Kind Healthy Life was born to help others transition to plant-based eating and provide science-backed information on the health and environmental benefits of a kind and healthy life.
