Thanksgiving State of Mind

Thanksgiving State of Mind

If you are like me, when I think of Thanksgiving I often think of our family traditions. You know, the things we do each year as we visit, bake, make and enjoy time with the folks or things we hold most dear. But traditions needn’t only happen once a year. We could mold a tradition each month, week or day and be thankful for the moment we give to our special tradition. And some traditions can be as simple as a morning cup o’ joe.

So, this Thursday morning as I pour the hot, dark liquid caffeine into my bright green mug, I’ll be thinking of ya’ll – and wishing you and your family the very best!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Cyn

p.s. So what’s your favorite food to make or eat during Thanksgiving? Mine is pumpkin pie!

Why yes! I Design Book Covers and Jackets

It’s true, I DO design book covers, book jackets and interior pages for publishers and authors. Like the cover to the left, Beginner’s Finnish, for example.

I’ve done this work for many years and I simply love it! I like the feeling I get when I walk into Barnes & Nobles and see the titles I designed on the book shelves. It’s an “I made this!” moment. Of course it takes many people to get a book from concept to bookshelf, but I am proud of my little corner of the process. I also like when I go to a friends home and find a book I designed on their bookshelf.

In general, I love the idea of books and want to contribute to the success of keeping content flowing in print. When authors, individually or with publishing assistance, put their know-how, experience and thoughts to creating content and produce a book, it is truly an incredibly exciting moment.

I work with publishers, individuals, authors and editors. I use …

SPARKcon 09/15: ideaSPARK Vol.8

Today the countdown begins. 30 days until the start of SPARKcon, the South’s premiere creativity event showcasing the creative spirit that lives within each of us. I look forward to this event every year and not just because I am actively involved in organizing ideaSPARK and PechaKucha Night Raleigh. It’s because I treasure our creative community and enjoy seeing the outpouring of community support. During SPARKcon I try to participate in events that are fun and inspiring and sometimes a little whacky. For example, last year I donated my car to graffitiSPARK, was a cocktail judge at tastySPARK, attended an Intellectual Property panel hosted by ideaSPARK, attended multiple venues for musicSPARK, feasted my eyes on hundreds of artSPARK chalk street drawings, saw hula-hoops on fire at circusSPARK and watched in awe as local fashion designers made the scene at fashionSPARK.

ideaSPARK Events Thursday – PechaKucha Night Raleigh Vol.8 starts off SPARKcon with an awesome ideaSPARK event. This well attended and much anticipated event ( Tickets go fast so get …

PKN Night #5/Noir Bar & Lounge

On Dec 2, 2010 we had our #5 PechaKucha Night at Noir Bar & Lounge in downtown Raleigh’s trendy Glenwood South. We had a great night with a fantastic turnout of over 130 attendees. Noir management had the event area all spiffy for the holiday and provided some snacks to soak up the many drinks that were bought at the bar. Yelp! was there and sponsored beer for the first 30 people to checkin using the Yelp! app. Thank you Yelp!!

If you were unable to be there live, we have video, yay!, so you can see all the presenters doing their “thing” at the PKN website. Thanks to our Videographers ( Ted Huff, Maria Droujkova) and Carlee for editing and posting the video.

One thing that was super special that night was that Carlee and I did a joint presentation on How we Created and Cultivated a Global Family. We found pictures and bits and pieces of memories to weave together an awesome talk. In the audience that …

The Mo’s/#TeamRDU

So this was my first Movember event. And I would say the event organizers should be mighty proud to successfully promote such a good cause. They raised awareness, donations ($21,661) and glasses of yummy brew all in the name of “Cancer Stinks“.

I wonder if the month of Movember might have been long and challenging for some Mo Bros and Sistas? I ask because I overheard marital bliss might have been at risk. Some might have laughed so hard that they could have hurt themselves, but man! these dudes really persevered. And I wonder how many razors got a good workout today!

Below are a few Mo’s that caught my attention, so I did them, in pencil of course. The Mo’s came in all shapes and sizes, some were even drawn onto the upper lip instead of grown, and some pasted on, but hey, the Mo was there! In attendance were biker dudes, hippie guys, super heros, well known actors and chicks with well placed fuzzy spots.

It was a fun time and I look forward to doing …

Dreams Do come true!

Read the full New York Post article about my daughter Rianna and how she made her dreams come true, with a little help from her sister.

It has been less than 60 days since our family said goodbye to Rianna as she headed to NYC with one overnight bag and a one-way ticket. We missed her right away, we still do actually, but she was determined to change her life and pursue a dream of living and working in NYC. Of course we supported her, always have, but in these economic times we were less than certain that what she dreamed about could happen in the short amount of time given. But SHE made it happen!

Rianna has always been an amazing lady, lucky in many ways, but also very willing and able to act upon the opportunities that are presented. She is beautiful and talented to be sure, but she has a silver bullet. Her silver bullet is the love and support her family members have for her, especially her sister, Carlee. As sisters they are very close and have …

ideaSPARK/PechaKucha Night at KINGS Barcade

Full photo stream on Flickr.

We had an awesome PechaKucha event during ideaSPARK this past Septemeber during SPARKcon. With over 200 people packed into the newly renovated KINGS Barcade our event opened the annual 4-day arts festival SPARKcon. Showcased during the evening were presentations by SPARKcon leader Aly Kalifa, young’ns, political representatives and local folks with passions for gardening, travel, movies and more.

My personal take away message from the evening was this statement from Josh Johnson “ Take care of problems when they are small” in reference to a rather large bunny in a really bad horror movie. He used allegory to compare selected bad movies to life lessons that each of us could relate to. I can’t tell you how many times I have repeated this particular statement to address recent life situations, but suffice to say it has been a lot. Just ask my family, they are probably tired of hearing me repeat it!

See video of all the presentations on the PKN website, www.pknraleigh.com.

Our feedback survey was awesome, thanks to the the free …

Pop Up Art Show at Excelsior Barber Shop

This week I participated in the Pop Up Show at Excelsior Barber Shop.  It was a great opportunity to meet other artists, get my artwork seen and do good “stuff” for the community. It’s called “Pop Up” because the event was rather spontaneous and very quickly organized, mmm actually in under 5 days! The idea for the show began when NY artist Rory Golden visited NC this week to speak at the Durham Arts Council. This is how he describes the genesis of the project:

“I got my hair cut by Howard this week on my visit to Durham. He is a wonderful person and I was inspired by meeting him. His space is awesome. I asked him if he’d host a show, bring in people to exhibit art and have a party. He said yes! It’s an opportunity to create community, support Howard and have a great time in a space filled with artwork – for sale!”

In addition to the art show, Howard ran a hair cut special – Men’s Haircuts $12 all day on the day …
