This week I participated in the Pop Up Show at Excelsior Barber Shop. It was a great opportunity to meet other artists, get my artwork seen and do good “stuff” for the community. It’s called “Pop Up” because the event was rather spontaneous and very quickly organized, mmm actually in under 5 days! The idea for the show began when NY artist Rory Golden visited NC this week to speak at the Durham Arts Council. This is how he describes the genesis of the project:

“I got my hair cut by Howard this week on my visit to Durham. He is a wonderful person and I was inspired by meeting him. His space is awesome. I asked him if he’d host a show, bring in people to exhibit art and have a party. He said yes! It’s an opportunity to create community, support Howard and have a great time in a space filled with artwork – for sale!”

In addition to the art show, Howard ran a hair cut special – Men’s Haircuts $12 all day on the day of the show! Proceeds from art sales went to Howard in support of his 40 year commitment to his business and for allowing us to invade his great space and hang our artwork.

Howard is cutting Oliver's hair.

In addition to being an inspired event to help artists and the community, this was also a great excuse for a Tuesday evening party! Thank goodness DeadEye Jack was in town ( thanks to Lonerider Beer for the brew) to keep our thirst under control. Adrian and Rory, the event coordinators, brought food and goodies and the remaining supplies were either given to Howard, guests, homeless folks, or saved for future events.

The hipster Pop Up Art Scene

Later that evening we strolled down Main Street to the The Pinhook and sat a spell waiting for Tuesday’s Open Mic Night to start. My new friend, Jean Caffeine (recently from Austin, TX) took the stage to entertain a small crowd with her song “Lucky Penny.”

It was a beautiful night to hang as an outlaw at the Lonerider Beer Saloon. The evening started with 2 tickets to the bar and nice buffet presented by the Pitt, best BBQ this side of the Mississippi. A little rain shook things up for a few minutes then it was back to a lovely night of beer and breezes on the back porch. I saw lots of new faces ( I know this because I was taking a few photos) and many of the usual outlaws showed up to enjoy the company of each other and the newest edition to the Lonerider Beer family ” Gunslinger Pilsner“. See a fantastic video below by Chris Jackson (@UplinkMedia) of Uplink Productions featuring the music of Michael G. Gonzalez.
Click Optimize sponsored a free Apple Shuffle for the best tweeted image of the Lonerider Beer that best represents YOU! posted before the event with hashtag #imanoutlaw. It took a little while to find the winner as she was [cough, cough]… busy in the office doing some research as her name was called. But soon she returned, and squealed with glee as she learned the news. Here is Rianna Mallard (twitter: riannam) winner of the Click Optimize Apple Shuffle accepting her prize .
What do I do?

I am an art director, graphic designer and creative entrepreneur. I focus in 2 areas: Book Jacket/Interior design and wonderful Wordpress websites. If you find yourself, or anyone you know, in need of these services I’d be most obliged if you would pass my virtual card along. And certainly if work is secured via your connection, an invitation to gather for a drink, beer or wine will ensue.

I am also an abstract artist and I am looking for places/galleries to show my artwork. Contact me if you are looking to fill your walls with great art.

thanks! Cyn

P.S. Do you have a virtual business card? I’d like to see it. If you walk downtown Raleigh, do you recognize the place shown on my business card? Please comment.

We have a lot of idea sharing going on so there’s no excuse for not trying to find at least one event to attend. Our growing community is apparently thirsty for new knowledge, and sippin’ on Peacemaker or Shot gun Betty without the backdrop of passionate storytelling just won’t cut it. Sorry Lonerider! The good news is there are a lot of events to choose from.
Photos from the show coming soon!

Artist Statement

I was thrilled when my friend Willa, an avid and very creative quilter, suggested I contribute paintings along with her quilt show “ I Used to be Something Else” at the Green Gallery inside the Scrap Exchange in Durham, NC. I was excited because, like her, I like the idea of reuse and found objects and enjoy incorporating these elements into my art. I also admire Willa and time spent with her is always a treasure… plus we have a blast! So, I went to her workshop and looked at her quilts, fussed with some fabrics, took little bits of this and that, things that felt nice, sparkled or had texture. I also used found objects from the Scrap Exchange. For some time I simply looked at the pile of “stuff” I had collected and as the date of the show started to creep up, I started to get antsy. I hadn’t worked with fabric, buttons or leather before and I wanted the work to coordinate but I didn’t want to lose my style in the process. I also had never worked directly on 1.5in bare wood board or particle board before, so that was a concern. I had other challenges too. Being winter my studio space was too cold to work in and I was desperate to get things started, so my living room floor was covered with plastic and a temporary studio set-up was rigged. Luckily, my roommates are very supportive and I am happy to report, everything all worked out!

The work presented in this show is meant to be fun and whimsical. The paintings include my usual style of distress, crackle, paper and acrylic with a few new elements of fabric, thread, buttons, wood, plaster and glass. My favorite colors of white, black and red play a dominant role. Wood and woodlands, birds and leaves, comforts of nature are one of my most beloved inspirations. In addition, thoughts of Willa’s lovely quilts, shape, squares, color, texture, clothing, and her of course, inspired me.
